Stump grinding uses a mechanical grinder to shred the stump and surface roots into mulch, typically 6–12 inches below grade, leaving the deep root system to decay naturally. Full stump removal — excavation — pulls the entire root ball out of the ground, which creates a large hole, disturbs the surrounding yard, and costs significantly more. For almost every Griffin yard, grinding is the better, faster, less invasive option.
Standard stump grinding goes about 4–6 inches below grade, which is enough for new sod or grass seed. If you plan to replant a tree or build in the same spot, we can grind 10–12+ inches deep — just let us know during the estimate so we can price accordingly.
Most residential stumps in Griffin grind out in 30–60 minutes. Very large or multi-trunk stumps can take 1–2 hours. A yard with several stumps can usually be completed the same day.
Grass seed or sod goes down well over a ground stump once the mulch is removed or mixed with topsoil. For a new tree in the exact same spot, we recommend either grinding deeper (10–12+ inches) and backfilling with fresh soil, or planting a few feet away to avoid competing with the old root system as it breaks down.
Our grinders are tracked equipment designed to protect your lawn, and we lay down mats when needed. Before we grind, we always recommend having underground utilities marked — you can call 811 for a free locate, and we can coordinate that for you. That way gas, power, water, cable, and irrigation lines all stay safe.
Stumps are tripping hazards, they’re tough on mowers, and they attract termites, carpenter ants, and fungi that can spread to nearby healthy trees. They also sprout suckers that are difficult to keep down. Grinding is a one-time job that recovers the space cleanly and prevents all of those long-term headaches.
